Getting Around
Return to "While in DC" page.
Washington is a very walkable city, and many of the major sites are within a small area of downtown. Beyond that, DC has an excellent Metro system that will take you most of the places you'd want to go. For a printable Metro map, please Click Here. On the Metro Website, you can also use the "Trip Planner" to figure out the easiest way to get from place to place by putting in your start and end location and the time you are traveling. Access the WMATA Website by clicking here.
Taxis are a good option for getting to and from out-of-the way locations, including Georgetown -- which does not have a Metro stop. Taxis in DC are metered, and the fare will start at a minimum of $3.00 when you get into the cab. It's normal for taxis to charge $1.50 per additional passenger and fees for luggage handling. Your best bet for getting a cab is to walk to a major street route and hail one. Your hotel may also be able to arrange for cab pick-up, particularly for airport trips.
If you need to call a cab, here are some taxi companies and their phone numbers:
Yellow Cab, 202-544-1212
Your way cab, 202-488-0609
Diamond Cab, 202-387-6200
Dulles Taxi, 202-333-8181
